Cassiopeia CA410 combines support for both private and public cellular networks in one solution
Anterix is a national private LTE company whose mission is to modernize critical infrastructure and secure the clean energy future by making the nation’s utility grid smarter. As the largest holder of 900 MHz spectrum in the USA, Anterix is enacting its strategy to expand the utilities ecosystem by supporting private network bands, 900 MHz and CBRS, with seamless failover to public network bands. Through this innovative strategy, Anterix is helping utilities transform their businesses and minimize their supply chain risk.
Anterix has partnered with Sequans, one of the world’s leading providers of 4G and 5G cellular IoT chips and modules, to design a new LTE Category 4, multi-band module with the functionality and flexibility that utilities need to modernize their critical energy distribution networks, while delivering the technology advances that will ensure their present and future reliability and resiliency. The new solution, Cassiopeia CA410, delivers cost-effective silicon economics and robust performance optimized for utilities and smart meters.
Cassiopeia CA410 combines support for the Anterix 900 MHz frequency band, the CBRS band, and all major USA public networks bands in a single module. A module like this has never been available before, and what it means for utilities is that they can operate their private LTE networks, using Anterix and/or CBRS, and can also operate on public networks such as AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. This enables them to give their customers unprecedented flexibility, reliability, and security, since there is virtually no place in the country where the module cannot connect and transmit. This failsafe capability shows how cellular-based technology is becoming the de facto solution for utilities in the modern era.
A research report from Ericsson (Connected Energy Utilities, 2023) confirms this trend and highlights the significance of cellular in the digitalization of the energy sector. The report states that the harnessing of cellular technology “will enable utility providers to expand capacity, optimize utilization of infrastructure, increase grid reliability, and boost operational efficiency through a secure and reliable network.”
Three utility providers responding to this trend are Anterix Active Ecosystem™ members: GE Vernova, 4RF and RAD, who have partnered with Anterix and Sequans on the development of the new module. These three are keenly interested in what the module can provide North American utilities, namely a high-performance yet cost-effective solution for smart meters that combines support for both private and public networks in one, single-SKU solution.
Visitors to this year’s DistribuTECH International, the premier annual event showcasing cutting-edge technology in energy distribution, will be able to see a live demonstration of the new Cassiopeia CA410 module in the Anterix booth, number 2001. Visitors may also visit Sequans in booth 1576 to learn more about the new module, along with the other module solutions (LTE-M/NB-IoT, Cat 1bis) Sequans has optimized to connect smart meters.
The Cassiopeia CA410 module from Sequans is available in two form factors: 1) CA410L for LCC, and 2) CA410M for M.2. Learn more about it here.
